Supjibi Family (Petoy, Supjibi, & Red Baron)

STOCK: For maximum production of good quality cuttings, maintain minimum night temperatures of 66-68°F/19-20°C throughout the production season. Use of night interruption lighting from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM is recommended through 15 May to prevent flower initiation. A minimum of 10 foot candles/107 lux is required to be effective. Provide a balanced and complete fertilizer regime to assure optimum plant growth. Light intensities of 4,500 to 5,000 foot candles/48,400 to 53,800 lux are ideal provided daytime greenhouse temperatures do not exceed 90°F/32°C.

The Supjibi family mother plants:

• produce fewer cuttings than Freedom™ mother plants
• have an optimum cutting maturity characteristic of 6 weeks
• are adaptable to multiple pinch (2-3) or single pinch, fast crop programs

PROPAGATION: Cuttings root easily under normal propagation conditions. The large leaves characteristic of this series may require additional space in propagation to minimize stretch and the occurrence of Botrytis. Use of a rooting hormone containing up to 2500 ppm IBA will promote the speed and uniformity of root development. Several chemical growth regulator applications are recommended during propagation to prevent stretching of this cultivar, however not as many as are required for V-17 Angelika types.

FINISHED PLANT CHARACTERISTICS: The Supjibi family is an easy series of poinsettias to grow and is well suited for all but the largest sizes and forms. Soft pinch and leaf removal is suggested for this series due to the large leaf size and potential for dominant branching patterns. The flower initiation date is 25 September, similar to other poinsettia cultivars. Multiple chemical growth regulator applications are required, but not as many as for V-14 or V-17 Angelika types. These cultivars are responsive to A-Rest®, Bonzi®, Cycocel® and Sumagic®, or combinations of B-Nine® and Cycocel®. The Supjibi family is resistant to epinasty.

CULTIVAR NOTES:

• Supjibi is sensitive to damage from bract edge burn or Botrytis and will benefit from managed programs to prevent these disorders. Maintain even soil moisture levels and avoid high soluble salts throughout production.
• Use of the newer cultivar Petoy is recommended as it is more resistant to these problems. Calcium sprays have aided in the prevention of bract edge burn.
• The large, fleshy bracts of this series make them more prone to shipping damage when boxed and transported for long distances.
• Red Baron has very “waxy” bracts that help create the dark, burgundy color. This characteristic is unique to this cultivar.
