STOCK: For maximum production of good quality cuttings, maintain minimum night temperatures of 66-68°F/19-20°C throughout the production season. Use of night interruption lighting from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM is recommended through 15 May to prevent flower initiation. A minimum of 10-foot candles/107 lux is required to be effective. Provide a balanced and complete fertilizer regime to assure optimum plant growth. Light intensities of 4,500 to 5,000 foot candles/ 48,400 to 53,800 lux are ideal provided daytime greenhouse temperatures do not exceed 90°F/32°C. 

Winter Rose mother plants:

• produce fewer cuttings than Freedom™ mother plants
• have an optimum cutting maturity characteristic of 7 weeks
• are adaptable to multiple pinch (2-3) or single pinch, fast crop programs
• may require protection from increased daytime temperatures that occur at high light intensities (5000+ foot-candles/ 53,800+ lux)

PROPAGATION: Cuttings root easily under normal propagation conditions. Use of a rooting hormone containing up to 2500 ppm IBA will promote the speed and uniformity of root development. Chemical growth regulator applications are generally not recommended during propagation.

FINISHED PLANT CHARACTERISTICS: Winter Rose poinsettias are unique, with incurved leaves and bracts. The flowering plants have globe-shaped flower heads instead of the usual “flat” bracts. Because of their incurved leaves, the plant is narrow and can be grown at a tighter spacing. Winter Rose is not as freely branching or as stiff stemmed as most commercial poinsettias but can be used for pinched and non-pinched forms. The flower initiation date is 25 September, similar to other poinsettia cultivars with response timing similar to 9-10 week cultivars. Chemical growth regulator requirements are minimal for Winter Rose; however, it is responsive to A-Rest®, Bonzi®, Cycocel®, Sumagic® or combinations of B-Nine® and Cycocel®, if treatments are required. Normal flower dates are late November to early December. Epinasty is not an issue with this variety.

CULTIVAR NOTES:

• Incurved leaves are difficult to spray for insect control. Use systemic pesticides, such as MarathonÒ, for good control of pests and minimal spray treatment.
  Because of the incurved leaves (reduced leaf area) Winter Rose has a lower water requirement. Grow on a separate bench or manage water requirements to avoid over-watering.
• Branched (pinched) plants require additional cuttings and vegetative growth time as the container size increases. Suggested configurations are as follows:
      • 3”, 4” and 5” pots – 1 plant per pot     • 6” – 6 ½” pots – 2 plants per pot
      • 7” pots – 3 plants per pot                     • 8” pots – 4 plants per pot
