This
FASTFACTS provides general growing guidelines for Stained Glassworks
Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides).
PROPAGATION
- Coleus
are easy to root with most other spring plants.
- No special
handling is required although bottom heat will promote quicker
root development.
- Propagate
using 1 cuttings per cell for best results.
- Cuttings
root in 3-4 weeks under normal conditions.
CULTURAL
REQUIREMENTS
Media
- Sterile,
well-aerated mixes are best.
- Optimum
pH range is between 5.5 and 6.3.
- Water-holding
capacity is important to achieve best consumer/post-production
performance.
Irrigation/Fertilization
- Avoid
excess irrigation throughout production as it will help reduce
stretch and encourage strong root systems.
- Feed
with complete, balanced fertilizers at 150-200 ppm nitrogen
(CLF). E.C. of 1.5-2.0 is a good target range under most conditions.
- Provide
complete minor element program.
- Use of
Osmocote® or other appropriate slow-release fertilizer
products may be beneficial in supplementing a CLF program
and may provide improved performance for the consumer.
- Provide
periodic clear water applications if excess soluble salts
accumulate.
Temperature/Humidity
- Establish
crop at 65°F/18°C average temperatures.
- Once
established, grow at:
- 70-85°F/21-30°C day temperatures.
- 55-65°F/13-18 °C night temperatures.
- Provide
good air circulation at all times.
- Maintain
relative humidity between 60 - 90%, be sure to reduce levels
if temperatures are lower.
Light
- Coleus
will tolerate high light intensities (4,000-6,000 foot candles/43,100-64,600
lux), but develop more intense foliage color in shadier conditions
(1,500 3,000 foot candles/15,690 31,380 lux).
Pinching
- Cuttings
may be pinched soon after transplant to encourage branching.
Additional pinching can be used to create full plant habit
and control height.
INSECT AND DISEASE CONCERNS
Insect
· Aphids
- Mealy Bug
-Whiteflies
Disease
- Alternaria
- Pythium
- Botrytis (gray mold)
USAGE
Grower:
4, 6 or 1 gallon pots, hanging baskets, combination
planters, baskets and colorbowls.
Consumer: Shade gardens, patio pots, mixed plantings, window
boxes. Prefer shade but will tolerate full sun conditions as
well.
Landscape
cultivars (DaDa Daddy, Touch of Class, Oompah, Golden Bedder,
South of the Border, Zebra, Molten Lava) have large, full leaves
with unique color patterns.
Novelty cultivars (Tilt A Whirl, Garden Walk, Fright Night,
Kiwi Fern, Dragons Claw) have unique foliage shape that
are accentuated by color patterns.
